There are so many things that, as a business owner, you should do. Things that your employees will expect of you, as well as stuff your customers do. If you sit down and think about it, it will seem countless. This may not be what you want to hear or read, but there are probably just as many, if not more, things that you should not do as a business owner. Running a small business is not easy. There are many mistakes you can make on the journey towards success. There are some outcomes that other seasoned entrepreneurs can warn you about, and ones that you’ll have to learn yourself. No one wants to make mistakes or go through hardships in their career, but this is how you learn from your past. You can read as many books or articles as you want, watch countless interviews, but there are just things that you will have to learn for yourself.


Well, as I said before, there are things you can learn about now, and you will not have to suffer through. So, here they are. What not to do when running you’re very own small business:

1. Do Not Get Discouraged

No matter how much you yearn for the success of your small business goals to just fall into your lap, it will never happen. You have to work for them to happen. It is not, and will never be an easy road. You will have to work towards your goals every day. Think of step-by-step plans, and follow through on them. If you are looking to be a business owner, you should know that you will have plenty of things are your plate. It is easy to become discouraged from this. You can get a headache and wanting to give up, but that is when you have to push through. Take it a step further. If you want your business to reach its full potential, go into each day knowing it may be difficult. This way, you are not discouraged by the workload you are responsible for completing.


2. Partner With Someone You Trust

Rushing into a partnership can be the downfall of many businesses. This can create obstacles for you that you never saw coming. You will start making rash decisions. You may even have rushed into the decision so much, that you picked the wrong person. Remember, you are sharing a career with this person. If this is your dream business, something that you have been working towards forever, then you should be sure you choose someone who wants the same things as you. You and your partner's goals should be parallel. It is smart for them to have strengths that you do not, and vice versa, but your overall goals should work well together. It may take some time to find the perfect partner, but it is possible.

3. Always Remember Your Dreams

Remembering what you are working towards also goes hand-in-hand with not being discouraged. Never lose sight of what you want, and what you are working towards. If you are working so hard towards something, it is likely that this has been your dream for some time. Maybe from young, maybe from college. Whatever the case may be, if you care enough to work towards something so vigorously, it is your dream. This is what you want. Meaning, every step along the way is worth it. This is, or was, a passion of yours. It should always be at the back of your mind.


4. Do Not Do Everything Yourself

When you are a business owner you will have so many things to do. There are what seems to be countless things to do. If you think that you will be able to do all of this on your own for the length of your career, you are wrong. This is where you need to learn to delegate. Any successful business owner knows that, in order to get to where you want to be, you need to learn to delegate. This is key. If you do everything yourself, you will burnout. Your mindset will not continue to be strong enough to accomplish what you wish you can. You must let others into your business world, and let your employees do some work. After all, that is what they are there for. You hired them to make your life easier, and help you out, so let them.

5. Always Continue Growing

There are many factors that contribute to the growth of your business. There are strategies that are most important. You should work towards these continuously, and try and make it evolve. For example, your marketing strategy, financial strategies, and your determined target market are most vital in the evolution of your business. Whatever your business industry is, it will evolve. Much like everything else, it will change over time. When you realize that your business is not in the best state, fix it up. If you notice that your business is not doing as good as it used to be, look to your strategies. They may need to be altered for your business to really grow as you’d like.

6. Keep Your Edge

It is extremely important to keep your mind and skills sharp when running a business. Many times, business owners lose their edge in a way. As they grow, they hire more people and stop being a hands-on boss. While your employees are there to help, you should never lose sight of what you have to do. As the boss, you should know how to do the basics of every job, if not be a master at it. Always be a competitive business owner, and try to make your business the best it can be.
